"Attempt things that you are not sure that you can accomplish: if you're certain that you can do a thing, this means that there is little to no point in actually doing it." Alan Moore from Writing for COMICS
So whilst I work with Karl and Elsewhen Press in the production side of An Android Awakes, I am embarking on a new journey in the wonderful world of being a writer. I have spent all of the summer wondering which way to go from here: another novel? Film script? Comic script? And it's gradually become clear that I would like to get into writing for comics for a while.
I've always loved comics and remember getting a letter published in The Hotspur about my then home town in Forres in Scotland. Later I got into Spiderman, the Beano and The Hulk. When I came to the age when I was commuting into work on the train into London and I was still reading 2000AD, when all around me were reading books or reading their newspaper, I knew that perhaps my future wasn't in banking and finance!
Sandman, Bone, Hellblazer, Shade the Changing Man, Stray Bullets and many many others started to fill up my collection until I was a full blown junkie. (applause - you can sit down now Mike, thank you for sharing your addiction.)
So after writing 3 novels and An Android Awakes it's time to try my hand writing for comics. Of course whilst I know all about structure, story arcs and all that wizardy stuff that's poured into a novel, I have no clue about comic writing. Hence the reference books at the top of this ramble.
I'm half way through them - and you know what? I can't wait to get started! And the moment when I finally decided? When Karl, the artist on An Android Awakes, said after reading the script for Android, "Mike, you must have read a whole load of 2000ADs in the past!"
Hopefully in time I can expand my writing credits from a letter in the Hotspur to something a bit more worthy of sticking in my writing portfolio!
